A new request for the authorization of an asbestos landfill has been submitted in Valeggio sul Mincio, raising concerns among citizens and local administrations. This initiative is made possible by a waiver approved in 2022 by the regional government led by Luca Zaia, which allows the establishment of landfills in vulnerable areas of aquifer recharge. The Committee for the Defense of the Territory Quaderni Valeggio, represented by president Gianni Bertaiola, has denounced how this decision contradicts the principles of environmental protection, increasing risks to public health and the local ecosystem.
While awaiting the evaluation of another similar project submitted by Progeco Ambiente Spa, the new plan from Tecnoinerti Srl will require citizens to further engage in the preparation of observations and studies. To highlight the seriousness of the situation, the Committee has proposed a motion in the Regional Council (n. 533/24) for the waiver to be re-examined. However, despite more than a year having passed since the introduction of the motion, the response from the government remains absent, raising significant concerns among residents and local organizations dedicated to environmental protection.
