The Brescia Court has issued a significant ruling regarding compensation for moral damages in favor of a family that suffered the loss of their dog, which was attacked by an Czechoslovakian wolfdog left unattended. In ruling no. 1256/2025, the judge acknowledged the right to compensation for non-pecuniary damages, considering the strong emotional bond between the family members and the animal, which was treated as a true member of the household. Each family member will receive compensation of 1,500 euros for the suffering caused by the loss.
The responsibility for the attack was attributed to the owner of the Czechoslovakian wolfdog, emphasizing that in such situations, it is always the owner who must answer for the actions of their animal. This decision represents an important step forward in recognizing pets as an integral part of people’s emotional lives and aligns with a growing social and legal awareness on the issue. In previous cases, judicial authorities had already established that the loss of a pet can have severe repercussions on individuals’ emotional well-being, thereby confirming the need for appropriate legal protection.
