Grana Padano Faces New 30% Tariffs in the USA. The Grana Padano Protection Consortium has expressed strong discontent regarding the American president’s decision to impose high tariffs on European products, labeling the action as an “economic act of war.” A letter sent to Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announces that starting from August 1, tariffs will increase to 30%, further exacerbating an already critical situation for the world’s most consumed PDO cheese. Stefano Berni, General Director of the Grana Padano Protection Consortium, emphasized that the current tariff is already high, and with the new increase, the consumer price in the United States could exceed $50 per kilogram.
Berni also warned of the devastating consequences for the production chain and for American consumers, who would be forced to pay significantly higher prices for a high-quality product. The Consortium’s appeal is directed at institutions to take action to mitigate the impact of these protectionist measures. With over 220,000 wheels exported in 2024, the United States represents a crucial market for Grana Padano, and there is hope that European authorities can effectively intervene in this delicate trade issue.
