The Operational Lakes Department of the Coast Guard was inaugurated in Milano, in the presence of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, and the General Commander Nicola Carlone. This new facility, located in the building of the Interregional Public Works Administration, will be responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations on Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore, and Lake Como. The department aims to ensure navigation safety through checks on recreational boating and joint operations with local forces already present in the area.
The new center is equipped with a state-of-the-art operations room that can communicate directly with rescue vessels active on the major lakes. So far this year, the Coast Guard has already conducted 144 operations, assisting over 234 individuals and 88 watercraft. With the activation of the Operational Lakes Department, an increase in the efficiency of rescue operations is expected during the summer season, a time characterized by a high influx of tourists. Approximately 100 military personnel will be deployed to ensure continuous and timely service for the safety of navigation on the three lakes.
