2000 Chess Festival Recap: Winners, Rankings, and Future Prospects
Even in 2000, the twenty-second edition of the international chess festival, the event concluded on Sunday afternoon with a festive awards ceremony in the unparalleled setting of the Casino’s ballrooms. Just under two hundred players competed across the four categories outlined in the regulations: along with their companions, they contributed to extending the tourist season for several hotel businesses.
Winners and Rankings
The winner among the international grandmasters was Ukrainian Vladimir B. Tukmakov with 7 points; the top Italian was Bologna’s Andrea Cocchi, who finished 18th with 5.5 points. Trentino master Massimo Zucchelli placed 33rd with 4.5 points.
In Open B, victory went to Lecco’s Daniele Vismara with 7.5 points, and Garda’s Massimo Mora, the national champion, finished 7th with 5 points.
In Open C, the candidate master from Alessandria, Claudio Del Nevo, outperformed the second national players from Trentino, Stefano Orlandi and Luciano Maistri, who finished alongside him at 6.5 points.
Promotion Category and Young Talents
The promotion tournament’s podium was entirely Brescia-based, with Mauro Dalò, James Salvotti, and Massimiliano Gacomini scoring 8, 6, and 5 points respectively; noteworthy in this category was the outstanding performance by 11-year-old Trentino native Marijana Matanovic, with 4 points, and 12-year-old Bolzano native Isabel Scharrer, who scored 3 points.
With the festival concluded, Cristina Rigo, an exceptional organizer, awaits the decision of the International Chess Federation which on Friday will appoint the 2001 senior world championship: Arco is in the running with Austria and Germany.
