2023 Wine Harvest Underway: Expectations for High-Quality Vintage
The harvest has started several weeks ago, in fact the white grape harvest is already fully completed, but only yesterday at the entrance of the Associazione Agraria on Viale Lutti, a long column of tractors loaded with merlot — the first red grape to be picked — formed, with farmers impatiently walking back and forth waiting for their turn.
The anticipation and the work will undoubtedly be rewarded by the excellent quality of the wine, which this year, as last, is guaranteed by a perfectly healthy and sweet product. Based on measurements of the sugar content (17.5 degrees for whites; between 18 and 19 degrees for reds), predictions suggest that the 2001 vintage wine will be even better than that of 2000, which was already said to be memorable.
Quantity and characteristics of the production
The crop’s quantity is also among the most fortunate. For selected whites like chardonnay and pinot grigio, around 7-8 thousand quintals have been delivered; for merlot, forecasted at 11-12 thousand quintals. The estimated production of prime varieties such as cabernet sauvignon and franc is significantly lower, around 5 thousand quintals, with harvesting to begin immediately after the completion of the merlot harvest.
Smaller varieties such as muller, moscato, lagrain, and rebo will be the last to be harvested. Once the harvest is finished, members of the Agraria will begin the olive season.
Decisions on traffic management and end of harvest
Thus, the movement of tractors to and from Viale Lutti has just begun. Fortunately, says Director Mario Zumiani, traffic has been temporarily diverted to allow exit towards Viale Damiano Chiesa.
This solution, continues Zumiani, would facilitate the passage of agricultural vehicles, and consequently general traffic, even during olive harvesting, which involves roughly the same movement.
Unfortunately, it appears that the municipal administration intends to restore the no-turning regulation from Viale Lutti to Viale Chiesa as soon as the harvest ends. We hope, concludes the director, that they will reconsider.
