Diesel Euro 5 Ban in Cities Postponed to 2026: The decision to delay the circulation ban has been officially announced, following an amendment presented by the League that modifies the Infrastructure decree. The new deadline for the ban on Euro 5 diesel vehicles has been pushed back from October 1, 2025, to October 1, 2026. In Lombardy, the restrictions will primarily affect urban centers with over 100,000 inhabitants, abandoning the initial threshold of 30,000 residents. Regions will also be able to adopt alternative measures to reduce emissions.
The President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, has positively commented on the postponement, describing it as a “common-sense choice” and emphasizing the importance of sustainable actions for both the environment and the economy. According to ACI data, there are approximately 3.7 million Euro 5 diesel vehicles in the country, accounting for 8.8% of the total number of vehicles in Italy; in the four northern regions, it is estimated that there are about 1.3 million. With the new regulations applying only to medium and large cities, a significant impact on the daily lives of the affected Italians is anticipated.
