The new Lake Operations Department of the Coast Guard was inaugurated in Milano in the presence of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini. This department is set to coordinate safety activities on the lakes of Garda, Maggiore, and Como. This event marks a significant step in enhancing lake safety in Italy, aiming to improve search and rescue operations, navigation policing, and recreational boating controls. The Department, located in the building of the Interregional Provveditorate for Public Works at Piazzale Morandi 1, will operate under the Maritime Directorate of Genoa and employ around 100 personnel.
The new center is equipped with an advanced operations room for direct communications with rescue units active on the lakes. Throughout 2024, the Coast Guard has already coordinated numerous operations on these bodies of water, assisting hundreds of individuals and vessels. With the activation of the “Safe Lakes” operation during the summer, an increase in commitment to ensuring safety for residents and tourists flocking to these areas is anticipated.
