Puegnago, Theft at the Chapel of San Macario: Painting of the Miracle Stolen

In the night between Saturday and Sunday, the Chapel of San Macario in Puegnago, located on Via Soprazocco in the Sovenigo lake area, was the scene of a sacrilegious theft. Unknown individuals forced the lock and gate of the structure, making off with a valuable 18th-century painting depicting San Macario alongside the Madonna and the Archangel Michael as he slays the dragon. Mayor Silvano Zanelli promptly filed a report with the carabinieri regarding the incident.

The stolen painting is shrouded in a legend linked to a miracle that occurred in 1799, when it is said that tears and water flowed from the saint’s eyes and the Archangel’s sword, attracting numerous faithful until April 11 of the same year. The chapel, built in the 18th century and restored in 1998, continues to be a destination for walkers and cyclists. This is not the first case of art theft in places of worship around the lake; in 2022, another painting was stolen from the church of San Filippo Neri in Terzago but was later recovered.
