Mercy Killing in Uganda: Disabilities and Ignored Realities

Recent testimonies have shed light on the practice of Mercy Killing in Uganda, a sensitive issue related to disability. Independent filmmaker Giulio Tonincelli revealed that during his stay in the Acholi region from November to December 2024, many mothers shared direct or indirect experiences regarding this custom, which aims to end the suffering of people with disabilities. The issue was raised in response to criticisms received from Paolo M. Giambelli, the health program coordinator of AICS, who challenged Tonincelli’s claims about the situation of local populations.

Tonincelli emphasized the importance of telling stories that are often overlooked, without falling into superficial judgment. He also pointed out Giambelli’s lack of understanding of the socio-cultural context of the Acholi and encouraged the public to reflect on these realities through his upcoming documentary. Thus, the issue of Mercy Killing emerges not only as a social problem but also as an opportunity to raise public awareness about the challenges faced by people with disabilities in difficult contexts.
