Brescia and Retail Trade: Crisis and Recovery Strategies

The retail sector in Brescia is facing a challenging phase, as highlighted by the recent Movimpresa – Infocamera data for the second quarter of 2025. With 23,380 registered businesses in the sector, there has been a significant decline compared to 2019, marking a decrease of 7.5%. This negative trend is set against a national backdrop of economic crisis, where stagnation in household spending and increased competition from digital platforms have further exacerbated the situation. The President of Confesercenti Lombardia Orientale, Barbara Quaresmini, emphasized the need for a support plan to promote innovation and revitalize local shops.

However, despite the overall difficulties, the Garda area shows signs of greater resilience. Andrea Maggioni, Coordinator of Confesercenti for the Lake region, stated that the presence of tourists helps to sustain a more dynamic and diversified demand for local businesses. This scenario allows merchants in the area to better cope with the impact of weak domestic and European demand, especially concerning non-food goods.
