Four citizens from Brescia were caught by the Carabinieri using a metal detector within a protected archaeological area near Castel Goffredo. This incident, which occurred recently, has led to the four being reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Mantova for unauthorized excavations and the alleged theft of archaeological artifacts belonging to the state. The officers discovered around thirty objects in the group’s possession, including coins and artifacts dating back to the Roman era. The area in question is already known to authorities for its significant historical finds and is subject to specific restrictions. Investigations are now focused on determining whether the activities of those reported were part of an organized operation linked to the illegal trafficking of artifacts or simply a case of reckless amateur searching. All recovered materials have been seized, and investigations are ongoing to check for any connections to other illicit activities in the field of archaeological goods.
