Poaching in Magasa: a rare black woodpecker killed
A serious incident of poaching has struck the community of Magasa, where a rare specimen of black woodpecker, a protected species, was found severely injured. Last Thursday, the Provincial Police of Brescia intervened after being alerted to assist the animal, which had been shot with five pellets. Transferred to the CRAS – WWF Wildlife Recovery Center in Valpredina, the woodpecker unfortunately did not survive its injuries, raising concerns among authorities and environmental organizations. This tragic event is part of a broader context of illegal hunting that plagues the region. The WWF has reported that in the early weeks of the hunting season, numerous injured protected animals have already been received. Local authorities have emphasized the urgency of adhering to wildlife protection regulations, while industry experts are calling attention to the need for more effective measures against poaching, a phenomenon that continues to grow despite the efforts of law enforcement agencies.
