Trentino Ushers in the New Year with Sustainable Celebrations and Animal Welfare

WWF Trentino has urged residents and local authorities to forego fireworks and firecrackers for the upcoming New Year, calling for sustainable celebrations to protect animals, public safety and the environment. The organisation says loud explosions cause stress and disorientation in pets and wildlife — citing an incident in 2021 when hundreds of birds died — and warns of temporary spikes in fine particulate pollution and an increased risk of fires in urban and natural areas.

WWF also highlights a rise in injuries among minors linked to firecrackers, reporting 64 cases in 2024 and 90 in 2025, and has asked local administrations to consider bans on these materials. The group recommends alternative, non‑explosive ways to celebrate that minimise harm to people, animals and the environment.
