Garda Launches €8B Public Works Loan for Major Infrastructure Projects

A large-scale loan for eight major public works projects. The administration’s plan to implement in a single initiative a series of significant interventions deemed urgent yet important for the capital of Garda is now underway. Eight projects have already been prepared and are now set to commence, all financed through a single large loan exceeding eight billion euros. These are public works considered essential and non-negotiable such as the water supply and cemetery, as well as projects necessary for the tourist season, including beach renovations.

Objectives and details of the interventions

The timelines, objectives, and details of the eight construction sites to be opened within a couple of months were explained yesterday by the newly elected public works assessor, Tommaso Giardino. “First and foremost,” explains the new head of the Department, “the works have been financed by a loan of 8.055 million euros contracted with CrediOp. The funds are allocated to expand the Rivoltella cemetery, renovate part of the Municipal Building, improve Spiaggia d’Oro, upgrade the road network in the Grezze neighborhood, and on via Garibaldi, via Venezia, and via Mazzini, as well as to enhance the drinking water treatment plant in Tassinara, Rivoltella.”

Let’s look in detail at what has been decided. The Rivoltella cemetery expansion involves increasing the number of niches, which are nearly exhausted despite having 2,080 already. The overall project involves expanding by constructing an additional 1,080 niches and 60 ossuaries. With the first phase currently in procurement, 380 new niches and 60 ossuaries will be built, including lighting and services. The works are expected to be completed by the end of the year at a cost of 1.600 million euros.

A total of 1.500 million euros will be needed to refurbish the west wing, the central area, and the attic of the Municipio Bagatta. These interventions, assures Giardino, will not cause significant structural modifications to the building, which is under a monument protection order. A second staircase providing access to the offices and an elevator accessible for disabled persons will also be installed. The start date for these works is within two months.

The upcoming interventions in the Spiaggia d’Oro area owned by the municipality will begin shortly. In the section toward the main road, 53 parking spaces will be created; there will also be a children’s playground, a multifunctional area on a large green lawn covering approximately 9,500 square meters, and the beach itself will be tripled in size to reach 2,000 square meters.

On the lakeside, a terrace, facilities, storage, and showers will be built. The park will be fenced and closed at night. The project’s cost is 700 million euros. In the Vicina neighborhood, road infrastructure will be redone, with widened streets, new sidewalks, lighting, underground utilities, and new paving. A connection between via Vicina di Sotto and via Montesuello will also be established. The estimated cost of this intervention is 700 million euros.

In Tassinara, Rivoltella, the water treatment plant will be tripled in capacity, and a new 1,500-cubic-meter tank will be constructed to address water shortages during the summer months. The total cost is 2.030 million euros, of which 150 million will be covered by the Regione Lombardia. Regarding road improvements, three projects have been drafted by the technical office.

On via Garibaldi, 700 million euros will fund sewer and underground utility upgrades, followed by the installation of a flagstone pavement using slabs and cubes. These works are scheduled to be completed before the Christmas period. Via Venezia will be expanded and will also include a sidewalk, a bike and pedestrian lane, and new lighting, with asphalt paving after utility upgrades. The estimated cost for this project is 800 million euros.

The intervention in Via Mazzini, which houses the schools, involves major maintenance work: sidewalks will be removed to create a pedestrian zone with flower planters and urban furniture. It is expected that around ten parking spaces with disc parking will disappear. All construction sites should be opened within about two months and then closed; some, like the Tassinara water supply project, will be completed by the end of next year.
