Brescia Gardesana Landslides Prompt Regional Safety and Transportation Response
Peroni: “The issue will be addressed soon”
Interventions on safety and landscape
After observing the landslides in Nanzel and della Rocchetta (south and north of Limone), Margherita Peroni (President of the Regional Territory Committee) has a certainty: “In the upcoming week’s meeting, we will schedule discussions to examine this problem as soon as possible. The Gardesano landscape can no longer be separated from its economic image based on tourism.”
On the same wavelength, Franco Nicoli Cristiani, regional councilor for Environmental Quality: “The Region does not have the means to fund projects but can plan. We will need to address the issue related to the Brescia side, even if a definitive solution will bring some years of inconvenience.”
Bruno Faustini, President of the Mountain Community, argues that the Gardesana “should not be a problem delegated only to Limone, as has been the case for too long. The tourist and entrepreneurial interest belongs to everyone, and our concerns also extend to the tunnel road sections: they are also outdated.”
Road situation and critical issues
Battista Martinelli, Mayor of Limone, speaks of “a money issue for the Brescia section of the Gardesana. La Anas must ensure the safety of our part as well. These are not complaints from us Limone residents: everyone can see what is to the north and south of our town.”
Manlio Bonincontri, Mayor of Tignale, is convinced that “closing the road for two years is unthinkable for the economy of the Alto Garda. We did not experience major setbacks at Christmas and New Year’s, but from Easter onward, the game must change. The ferry cannot replace road traffic.”
Marcello Festa, Deputy Mayor of Gargnano, does not forget “the concerns of thousands of people for their jobs related to the road opening and tourist influx. Not to mention the discomfort of residents.”
Need for interlocutors and alternatives to transportation
Pieremidio Baldassarri, Councilor in Limone and in the Mountain Community Park, considers it necessary “to have an interlocutor representing Brescia’s needs in various forums. The Trentino authorities will take care of restoring their section of the road: we must focus on the Brescia side.”
Nirvana Grisi, Trade Delegate for the municipality of Salò, raises concerns about “the risk that tourists will be induced to choose alternative places, losing interest in Garda.”
Paolo Elena, Mayor of Toscolano Maderno, reiterated that he will not allow cars into the historic centers of his municipality and insists: “This situation seems designed so that Brescians can face reality with the same resolve as the Trentino residents.”
And what about boosting ferry services? Many believe this is not a feasible option: just think of one of the many examples proposed on New Year’s Eve. Eight buses from Germany had reached Riva, with clients heading to Limone. The transshipment would have cost around 400,000 lire per coach: just less than the fare paid to reach Riva from beyond the Alps.
Without mentioning that the contract included a circuit of the lake, a visit to Verona, and so on. b.f.
