Gardesana Closure Disrupts Limone Football Teams and Local Travel
The enduring closure of the Gardesana is causing significant problems for the Limone sports community as well. Since early March, the two football teams of S.S. Limonese will resume playing on various pitches across Trentino.
The first team competes in the amateur second division championship. During the first half of the season, they were one of the leading teams, and at the winter break, they were fifth in the standings. The other team, which is a youth squad, is registered in the youth category.
Officials’ Comments and Consequences
“We had to deal with an emergency situation back in spring two years ago when another landslide isolated our town for several months,” says a worried Mario Tombola, the dynamic president of Limonese. “Now, things are expected to worsen because the closure of the Gardesana seems set to last for about two years. Reaching via Lago Riva will be a nightmare. Travel times will be significantly longer, causing serious disruptions.”
Not to mention the rising costs, which will heavily impact our already tight budget. There’s also the danger of not arriving on time for matches: the spring tourist influx will inevitably cause problems with ferry loading.”
Recurring Problems and Historical Participation
The president of Limonese recalls that this ordeal will have to be faced every two weeks—on Saturdays for the youth team and Sundays for the other team.
“The problem is that similar fates await many other teams from Trentino, which will have to come to Limone to play league matches at the Fasse street stadium.”
S.S. Limonese, founded in 1955, has always felt itself an integral part of the nearby Trentino sports scene. This is vividly confirmed by over 40 years of participation in various leagues and collaborations with clubs from the Busa area.
