Mantova Civil Protection Meeting on Risks, Prevention and Community Safety
On Tuesday, March 27th at 9:00 PM in the council hall, an open meeting titled “Civil Protection Forecasting and Prevention Program” will take place. Organized by the Province of Mantova and the Civil Protection Department of the Region, the evening aims to inform the population about local risks and how to prevent them.
A pamphlet, distributed at the Comune, illustrates the different risk areas. Primarily, floods, which in reality minimally concern the Alto Mantovano region, as well as forest fires.
Hydrogeological Risks and Earthquakes
Hydrogeological risks, however, are present, especially regarding the vulnerability of aquifers: within the province, “one of the riskiest zones is the pedecollinare strip that extends from the foot of the morainic hills up to the gates of Mantova”, the pamphlet states.
The threat of earthquakes marginally affects the Virgilian territory, although the highest risk (VI-VII degree Mercalli) is also concentrated in the hills south of Lake Garda.
Weather and Industrial Risks
Other aspects of civil protection that will be discussed next Tuesday include meteorological risks, but it is primarily the industrial hazard that concerns Alto Mantovano and Castiglione in particular.
The pamphlet reminds that chemical companies such as Albright & Wilson in the city of Aloisiana, as well as Liquigas in Asola and Fais Italiana in Cavriana, should be monitored closely.
“The municipality hosting such a facility,” it states, “must provide citizens with information about the activities carried out within the site, the substances and preparations present, the nature of the incident risk, and the prevention and safety measures implemented.”
Community Preparedness
For this reason, Mayor Sigurtà intends to organize a civil protection drill for residents, to ensure that the people of Castiglione are prepared in case of sudden emergencies.
