Castiglione’s Waste & Water Projects Accelerate with New Composting Plant

This is the decisive year for the development projects of Int. Dep. Cast., the municipal company of Castiglione delle Stiviere that manages waste, water cycle, and planning.

Work has, in fact, begun at the via Gerre headquarters on the construction of the new 28,000-ton composting plant, which will replace the current facility of about 8,000 tons. Simultaneously, the collection of domestic wet waste will commence, and the capacity of the water reservoir will be doubled.

Design details and work progress

“The new composting plant,” explains President Nunzio Belluzzi, “will operate like the current one, which processes vegetable waste and a small portion of sludge to produce fertilizer useful for agriculture. Managed by us, Tea, and Garda 1, the plant will come into operation by the end of the year, in enclosed buildings rather than open-air, like now, further limiting the already minimal inconvenience caused by odors.”

In parallel, within the month, we will test the collection of domestic organic waste—kitchen scraps—from 2,000 residents of the 1° Maggio district. These scraps can account for up to 40% of the trash. They will be collected every two days and composted together with green waste.

Results and ecological positioning

Ultimately, only about 20% of waste may end up in landfills, resulting in significant ecological and economic savings.

“For this reason,” adds Belluzzi, “if any party wants to downsize a well-functioning company with 30 employees and a turnover of 8 billion euros, compared to 4.8 billion three years ago, they should state it clearly.” He is referring to recent criticisms from Forza Italia and Lega.

Responses and analysis on environmental management

Belluzzi responds without controversy: “I agree that the minority should be represented on the board of directors,” he says, “but I also emphasize that we have no secrets.”

We treat 25,000 tons of leachate, which are waters exiting RSU landfills. These are lawful effluents that, in fact, have a positive effect on our two plants, which have the capacity for 100,000 equivalent inhabitants.

However, I must add that we found a deficient situation in the water supply systems. Despite having some of the best water in the province, potable at the source and distributed without any treatment, today we are spending 400 million euros to double the reservoir.

Those who managed before us did not consider that Castiglione is growing?
