Ancient Padenghe Medieval Festival at Castle and Historic Center
It will undoubtedly be one of the most unique festivals on Lake Garda, taking place in Padenghe sul Garda this coming weekend. A “Medieval Festival” that will cover the entire historic center and the magnificent castle above, which dates back approximately to the 10th century, originally built as a refuge for residents in case of attack. “Ancient Padenghe” is the title of this inaugural edition, scheduled for August 17, 18, and 19, which will feature numerous activities including a district tournament.
Organization and Participation
The event is organized by the Department of Sport and Leisure, headed by Giovanni Squassina, in collaboration with the Polisportiva Vighenzi, the Gruppo Alpini e Giovani, the Department of Culture, and the districts themselves. The transformation of the historic center into a medieval town involves widespread participation, with many attendees wearing period costumes or similar attire.
Friday Evening Events and Historic Center Activities
On Friday evening at 8:00 PM, the program begins with the opening of the medieval market, featuring tasting of ancient flavors at taverns set up along the streets of the historic center. At 9:00 PM, a show by minstrels, jongleurs, and storytellers will entertain visitors until the costume procession “Trial of the Witch” begins.
Throughout the streets, starting from 10:00 AM, “ancient” court painters will be active, capturing scenes and locations related to the event on canvas.
Saturday, August 18, and Key Highlights
The medieval market and taverns will open again on Saturday. At 9:00 PM, at the castle, there will be a gathering of the flag bearers of the Knights of San Giorgio of Chiaravalle. Afterwards, the flag bearers will parade through the town and districts to reach Piazza d’Annunzio.
At 10:00 PM, the First District Palio will take place, with knights from different districts competing for the title.
The Final Day on Sunday
On Sunday, the concluding day, at 8:00 PM in the monastery courtyard, there will be an exhibition of works created by the ancient court painters. Food stalls offering traditional culinary delights will also be present, with dishes prepared by the districts, emphasizing lake fish, paired with local DOC wines.
Hopes and Closing of the Historic Center
“I hope it will go as well as possible,” states mayor Giancarlo Allegri. “All the conditions seem to favor a positive outcome. This is an experimental event since it is the first time in Padenghe, with the active involvement and full cooperation of everyone. If we achieve the desired results, it will undoubtedly pave the way for future editions and success.”
During the event, the entire historic center will be closed to vehicular traffic. For those heading towards Soiano from the lake or Lonato, the new small ring road around the sports field will be available. For arrivals from Bedizzole, the new bypass connecting both to the lake and to Lonato and the parking areas of the historic center will be open.
