Nonviolent Movement Proposes Museum at Peschiera Military Prison
The idea comes from the Movimento non violento (Nonviolent Movement), authored by Gianfranco Nibale from Padua. In a letter published yesterday in the local paper «Il Mattino», the author suggests transforming the Peschiera military prison, currently closed, into a permanent museum dedicated to the history of non-violence in Italy and worldwide. A place for dissemination through appropriate communication tools such as a cinema house and the library itself. «All this can only happen if local authorities and volunteers jointly present a strong request to the Ministry of Defense,» Nibale asserts convincingly, citing the example of the Gaeta military detention center, which «will soon become a cultural venue hosting the newly established University of Cassino.» There is no doubt that the proposal from the Movimento non violento is anything but contemptible; in fact, it carries a qualifying character for an area that has been abandoned for several months. «To tell the truth,» clarifies Mayor Bruno Dalla Pellegrina over the phone, «the ex-camp XXX Maggio is technically retired and not decommissioned. In theory, the structure, which is under the jurisdiction of the Sulmona penitentiary organization command, can be reopened in case of extreme need.»
