Ghedi Airbase: New Commander Takes Over from NATO-Veteran Nordio
Ghedi – A farewell and welcome meeting took place yesterday morning at the Province headquarters. President Alberto Cavalli received Colonel Roberto Nordio and his peer Gianmarco Bellini. The former, already commander of the Sesto Stormo based at Ghedi Airbase, is about to leave the base for a new NATO appointment in Poggio Renatico, in the province of Ferrara; the latter is set to take over responsibility for the Ghedi flying unit. Cavalli thanked Nordio for his activities during nearly two years of service in Brescia.
The missions dedicated to international security in the Balkans, as well as repeated contacts with the civilian population, were among the most significant aspects of his work. These culminated in the spectacular (and highly followed) “Giornata Azzurra” (Blue Day) in June. He also wished him good luck as he takes on his new role, which officially begins next Tuesday.
The past of Colonel Bellini
Colonel Bellini, as we recall, had previously served at Ghedi. Ten years ago, commanding a “Tornado”, he was shot down and captured by Iraqi forces, along with navigator Cocciolone, during the Gulf War. For that mission, Gianmarco Bellini received the Silver Medal of Military Valor.
