Triathlon Returns to Peschiera for the 2023 Città di Garda Trophy

Triathlon returns to Peschiera. Next Saturday, on the shores of Lake Arilicense, the international Città di Peschiera del Garda trophy will take place, now in its fourth edition. Surrounded by a unique landscape, four hundred athletes from all over Europe will compete for the title, which counts towards the Italian club championship and the Railway Workers’ post-work championship.

Competition Details

Two factors will determine the winners: the athletes’ skill level and the course, which has already been deemed by the Italian Triathlon Federation as one of the most interesting and selective, especially because it is not a straight line. What will make the difference are, on the land segment, the climbs and descents the terrain offers between Peschiera, Ponti, and Pozzolengo, while in the water, certainly, the presence of currents around the walls along the course will influence the swimmers’ performance, favoring or hindering them depending on the flow.

The race starts at 12:30 at the port of Peschiera for the one and a half kilometer swim around the Venetian fortress; then the cycling segment begins from the parking lot of Porta Brescia, challenging participants with a 40-kilometer course (to be repeated twice) within the Lugana wine production zone.

The Race Stages

Finally, the competition concludes with a 10-kilometer run through the city streets. Spectators will only need to choose the best vantage point: recommended spots include the Porta Brescia bridge, the middle canal, and the historic center. The surrounding villages will also see athletes passing through.

The sporting event, organized by the Italian Triathlon Federation, the Coni (National Olympic Committee), and the Dopolavoro ferrovieri (Railway Workers’ Post-Work Association), will be broadcast entirely this year by Rai Sat and Stream Tv. It will involve 35 sports clubs, as triathlon increasingly attracts young participants.

Comments from Organizers and Participation

“Indeed,” comments Maurizio Zurma, head of the trophy’s organization, “there are about 10,000 licensed athletes in Italy, and in the province of Verona alone, 13 clubs have already been established.”

“We have achieved great satisfaction from this trophy, which we have been proposing in Peschiera for four years,” Zurma continues, “and the positive feedback from the federation keeps encouraging us to maintain this important sporting event. The technical and scenic features of the course are remarkable, and we hope that on Saturday afternoon many people will enjoy a great day of sport.”

Preparations are already underway, and many local organizations will participate to ensure the trophy’s success. Hundreds of athletes are expected from different countries, all aiming to claim victory.

Last year, Davide Maraya from Fumane and Beatrice Lanza from Biella (second at the 2001 World Championships) won the cup. All the signs point to a highly interesting race this year.
