Brescia Commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day with Local Events and Survivor Stories

On the Day of Remembrance, several events across the territory highlighted the Holocaust, deportation, and resistance. These included a school performance of “Il Giusto” by third-year students in Tremosine, a theatrical production of “L’Austriaca” at Teatro Telaio, and discussions at the Vobarno Library and Toscolano Maderno organized by local associations and the ANPI, focusing on the stories of those recognized as Righteous Among the Nations and local victims.

Historically, the Holocaust affected the province despite a small Jewish population (around one in eight thousand). Notable events include the February 1944 deportation of nineteen Brescians from Fossoli to Auschwitz, with only two survivors. Other documented cases involve victims from Gardone Riviera, Salò, and Toscolano Maderno, with ongoing archival research uncovering additional stories. All events are open to the public free of charge.
