Honoring Gino Bartali and Commemorating the Holocaust in Gardone Riviera
A theatrical performance dedicated to students, produced by Chronos3 and introduced by Flavio Casali, was held at Palazzo Casinò in Gardone Riviera to honor Gino Bartali. The event highlighted Bartali’s courageous efforts in 1943, when he transported false documents from Assisi to Florence’s bishop to help over 800 Jews escape, embodying the principle that “good deeds are not spoken of.”
Gardone Riviera also commemorates Holocaust victims through three Stolpersteine honoring Alfredo Russo, Arturo Soliani, and Umberto Soliani. Russo, deported to Auschwitz and murdered in 1944, fled Vienna in 1939. The Soliani brothers, owners of a local shop, were arrested during a raid in 1944, deported to Auschwitz, with Umberto dying at Dachau and Arturo possibly at Gross-Rosen or Flossenbürg.
