Underwater Cleanup in Sirmione to Remove Shot Pans on March 22
A submerged debris removal operation is scheduled for March 22, 2026, in Sirmione, Italy. Organized by WWF Bergamo-Brescia and WWF Sub in collaboration with the local municipality and Sirmione Servizi, the cleanup will focus on retrieving hundreds of clay and ceramic clay targets from the lakebed, which have been there for over 50 years.
The presence of these targets was detected in November 2025 by the underwater robot Zeno, developed by the University of Pisa’s Department of Information Engineering in partnership with WWF. The robot’s mapping mission identified the targets as JET TWO models manufactured by Benzoni of Bergamo. Professional divers will manually remove the targets for proper disposal, with volunteers providing logistical support and local authorities overseeing the operation.
