San Giorgio Castle Prisons Reopen in Mantua
Mantova’s Castello di San Giorgio reopens its south-west tower to the public in 2026, coinciding with the 160th anniversary of Mantova and Veneto’s annexation to Italy. The restoration, completed after earthquake damage in 2012, included structural safety upgrades and the preservation of the cells where Risorgimento patriots Carlo Montanari and Felice Orsini were imprisoned.
To mark the event, a free aerial dance performance by Antoine Le Menestrel will be held on March 29, 2026, at 4:00 PM on the castle facade, followed by guided tours of the prison cells at designated times. Starting April 7, guided visits will be available Tuesday to Saturday, with scheduled times for schools and individuals; tickets cost €5, and reservations are required. Accessibility is limited, and visitors with mobility or health issues are advised accordingly.
