Garda Carpione Joins ASTRO Project with €13 Million Investment

The Carpione del Garda (Salmo trutta carpio), an endemic species under a strict fishing ban, is nearing the completion of the ASTRO project. This initiative aims to develop breeding protocols, traceability systems, and genetic characterization, coordinated by the Astro cooperative with scientific oversight from the Trentino FEM Foundation and collaboration from the University of Bologna, involving researchers and producers from Brescia, Verona, and Trento. The project is scheduled to conclude in March 2027.

In its operational phase, 11 trout hatcheries in Trentino will benefit from €13 million funded by MASAF to enhance production performance, improve wastewater management, and pilot a biorefinery for organic waste recovery—producing trout oil and flour for food and feed sectors. The project also includes environmental certifications, protocols to preserve genetic purity, and staff training for commercial management.
