Maguzzano Abbey Kicks Off Summer Spirituality Events on July 9

The Abbey of Maguzzano, set between morainic hills and water on the southern shore of Lake Garda, was founded in the 9th century by Benedictine monks and today operates as a living spiritual, cultural, and hospitality center run by the Don Calabria Institute, welcoming individuals, families and groups and fostering ecumenical and interfaith dialogue.

Historically, the abbey endured cycles of prosperity and upheaval, with a pivotal moment in 1797 when Napoleon suppressed religious orders. Recovery began in 1904 under Trappist-Cistercian monks from Algeria, and in 1938 the complex passed to Don Giovanni Calabria, later canonized, who renewed its spiritual and social life.

Today Maguzzano hosts a male and female Don Calabria community and offers cultural seminars, ecumenical and interreligious programs, and summer activities such as “Giovedì in Monastero.” The schedule runs July and August with 9:30 welcome, 9:45 prayer, 10:00 theme and silence, 11:30 sharing, 12:30 lunch (booking), and 15:30 rosary; a Biblical Day is planned for July 12 from 9:00 to 18:00, with Fr. Moreno Pollon. Sunday guided tours are free at 16:00.
