Pernici Breaks 800m Record in Nancy, Beating Fiasconaro After 53 Years

Italian 800-metre record broken in 2026 in Nancy, France: 23-year-old Francesco Pernici from Esine won the event in 1:43.60, lowering Marcello Fiasconaro’s previous best of 1:43.7 set at Milan’s Arena on 27 June 1973. Pernici, who competes for Fiamme Gialle and is coached by Bersini, took the national record in the same week.

Also in the same period, Marcel Jacobs won the 100 metres at the Raiffeisen Austrian Open in Eisenstadt in 9.67, with wind of +4.1 m/s; the time was not eligible for record purposes due to wind conditions. Jacobs is scheduled to compete at the Herculis EBS meeting in Monaco on Friday, 10 July 2026, with the European Championships set for August in Birmingham. Meanwhile, Pietro Mennea’s 200-metre record of 19.72 from Mexico City on 12 September 1979 still stands.
