Fake Carabiniere Scam Hits Lonato
A man attempted a fake “Carabinieri” scam at an address in Via Bersaglio in Lonato del Garda, presenting a forged badge and claiming he needed to check whether counterfeit banknotes were circulating locally. He allegedly asked the elderly homeowner to hand over all money kept at home, and also sought information about a safe and jewelry, citing a supposed incident involving the victim’s alleged use of counterfeit money during a fuel purchase.
Suspicious of the story, the resident refused and the fraudster left, saying he would return. The victim then contacted the Carabinieri station in Lonato del Garda, which confirmed the incident was fraudulent and launched investigations to identify the suspect, who had already fled. Authorities urged residents never to give money or valuables to strangers—even if they claim to be law enforcement—and to verify by calling 112.
