Varano Ordinance Issued in Montichiari After Exotic Reptile Sighting

A temporary ban on pedestrian and cycling traffic, as well as on stopping, has been issued in a rural area of Varano Montichiari after reports of an exotic reptile. The order was signed by Mayor Marco Togni for public safety reasons, following multiple reports received by the municipality.

The restricted zone is bounded by Provincial Road 668, the areas of Colomberino Castellina and Pozzo Cavato, and the border with the Municipality of Calcinato. It includes agricultural plots, farm roads, irrigation channels, and vegetation between properties, and applies to pedestrians, cyclists, and any parking or stopping within the area defined by the ordinance.

According to the document, local farmers reported the presence of an adult monitor lizard, supported by geotagged photographs. The order also cites assessments by two veterinarians and a site inspection carried out on Friday, 24 July, involving the provincial police, Carabinieri forest units, and local police. The animal has not been captured, and its presence in the north-east sector is considered a potential risk, particularly for people walking, cycling, or with pets; Calcinato has been informed for checks on the neighboring territory.
