Brescia’s Garda Area Unveils New Wastewater Treatment System

The Garda depurazione project moves into its decisive phase with the submission of the Technical-Economic Feasibility Project for a new collection and wastewater treatment system on the Brescia side of Lake Garda. The initiative, worth €314.53 million, will replace a sewer network built more than 50 years ago and includes facilities in Esenta (Lonato), around 60 km of collectors, five pumping stations, and a 9.8 km dual underwater pipeline connecting Toscolano Maderno and Salò. The treatment plant is designed for about 200,000 population equivalent, accounting for peak tourist season demand.

The selected solution was chosen from six alternatives to better fit the agricultural landscape and reduce visual impact. It also features reuse of treated water for irrigation across about 700 hectares, alongside photovoltaic generation, heat recovery, and biogas production. Starting in September 2026, the process will enter Conferences of Services and an Environmental Impact Assessment; construction will be split into three lots, with the first due by 2030 and completion targeted for 2034.
