Giulio Comincioli’s Military Dog Tag Returns to Toscolano After Nearly 90 Years

An alpine soldier’s identity tag (piastrina militare) belonging to Giulio Comincioli has been returned to his family in Toscolano after nearly 90 years. The item was found in 2025 near the former Stalag I B/Kommando Prostken prisoner-of-war camp in Bogusze, Poland, and was handed over during a ceremony in Colico to his nephew Alessandro, his cousins, and a delegation from the Italian Alpine Association (ANA).

Comincioli, who served in the 2nd Regiment of the Fucilieri, was captured in Vipiteno after the armistice of 8 September 1943 because he chose to remain loyal to Italy rather than join the Nazi-fascist regime. He was transported on a sealed train and then interned in Poland, where he remained a prisoner in a camp; the discovery of the tag and his identification through a list helped reconstruct a family story that had long remained unknown.
