Mayor Calls for Summer Bike Halt on Garda’s Gardesana Road After Accidents

Six incidents were reported on the Gardesana on Sunday, 2 August, including one involving injuries near Pai. Around 9 a.m., a motorbike stopped to let a pedestrian cross, and a group of five or six cyclists, arriving in a line, collided with the vehicle. Three cyclists fell; two suffered abrasions, while another was treated by the 118 emergency service and taken to Peschiera Hospital.

In Torri del Benaco, Mayor Stefano Nicotra said the road is too dangerous for training groups and proposed banning cycling teams from using the Gardesana from 1 June to 30 September, especially on summer weekends. He cited cases where some groups occupy the lane, continue through traffic lights even when red, and force drivers into risky overtaking. Local police carried out on-site investigations and will assess whether fines are needed, while the proposal is also being discussed with other lakeside mayors.
