The Ciclovia del Garda has returned to the centre of territorial and institutional debate after a boat inspection in the Alto Benaco, promoted by the permanent Third Commission of the Autonomous Province of Trento. The trip, led by commission chair Vanessa Masè and vice-chair Lucia Coppola, brought together provincial councillors and representatives of environmental associations to assess from the lake waters the condition of the rock faces between Riva del Garda and the border with Limone sul Garda, where planning includes the most challenging sections of the circumlacual cycle-and-pedestrian ring.
Delegates from the Comitato Salvaguardia Area Lago di Riva del Garda and the Coordinamento Interregionale Tutela del Garda took part in the inspection. From the boat, participants examined critical points near the historic Limniadi and Eolo tunnels along the Gardesana Occidentale, an area described as having limestone cliffs dropping directly to the water and affected by ongoing problems of geological instability and rockfalls.
During the crossing, the committees reiterated their request to stop the installation of metal walkways anchored on cantilevers to the live rock. They cited concerns over the permanent visual impact on the natural cliffs and over public safety, referencing rock detachments reported during past consolidation and rock-scaling works at height. The discussion also addressed costs for the Trentino side, with figures reported as exceeding ten million euros per kilometre in the most engineering-complex lots, and the risk of placing a burden on public budgets due to potential prolonged closures in winter or during intense rainfall. The inspection outcomes will be compiled into an official report to be discussed at upcoming sessions of the provincial council in Trento to evaluate the arrangements for future tender lots.
