The Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera stands as one of Europe’s most unique monumental complexes, a vast architectural and memorial citadel conceived between 1921 and 1938 by the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio alongside the architect Gian Carlo Maroni.
Spanning over nine hectares of hillside overlooking the waters of southwestern Lake Garda, the estate integrates historic villas, terraced Mediterranean gardens, open-air squares, military relics, and monumental stone watercourses. Originally acquired as the Villa Cargnacco, the site was transformed into an enduring testament to Italian twentieth-century literature, art, and military history. D’Annunzio legally donated the complex to the Italian State under deeds initiated in 1923 and finalized in 1930, ensuring its preservation as a national foundation.
Gian Carlo Maroni and the Architecture of the Prioria
The domestic core of the citadel is the Prioria, the former farmhouse completely restructured by Gian Carlo Maroni into a labyrinthine sanctuary of thought and private contemplation. The interior preserves approximately 33,000 volumes and over 10,000 artworks and rare decorative objects collected by the poet throughout his life.
Each room was meticulously orchestrated with stained glass, dim lighting, and rich textiles to shield the writer’s photophobic eyes and cultivate an atmosphere of sensory immersion. Among the most significant interiors is the Officina (the Workshop), the only room illuminated by bright, natural daylight, designed with austere wooden furnishings and a low doorway intended to enforce a bow of respect upon entering. Nearby, the Stanza del Mascheraio (Room of the Mask-Maker) served as a waiting chamber inscribed with biting epigrams to discourage unwanted visitors, while the Stanza della Cheli hosted formal dinner parties beneath a large gilded bronze carapace of a turtle.
Monumental Grounds: Nave Puglia, MAS 96 and Ansaldo SVA 5
Beyond the residential quarters, the landscaped grounds ascend through cypress avenues, groves of olive trees, and mountain streams channelled through the Valle dell’Acqua Pazza. Embedded directly into the limestone rock of the hillside is the forward section of the military cruiser Nave Puglia, gifted by the Italian Royal Navy in 1925 and reconstructed on site under the supervision of naval engineers.
The military heritage of the estate also includes the legendary anti-submarine motorboat MAS 96, aboard which d’Annunzio took part in the famous 1918 naval raid known as the Beffa di Buccari, housed in a dedicated neoclassical dock designed by Maroni. Suspended inside the auditorium building hangs the original biplane Ansaldo SVA 5, flown by the poet during the historic Flight over Vienna on August 9, 1918.
The Amphitheater (Parlaggio) and Modern Cultural Life
Crowning the estate’s lake-facing slope is the monumental open-air amphitheater known as the Parlaggio. Modeled after the classical theater of Epidaurus, the arena was envisioned by d’Annunzio and Maroni in the 1930s to frame the waters of Lake Garda, the Sirmione peninsula, and Mount Baldo as a natural backdrop.
Completed according to modern acoustic and restoration standards, the Parlaggio serves as the home venue for the international summer festival Tener-a-mente, drawing international musicians, theatrical productions, and audiences from across Europe. The summit of the hill is crowned by the circular marble Mausoleum, where d’Annunzio’s tomb rests surrounded by sarcophagi dedicated to his closest military companions.

The monumental complex is located at Via del Vittoriale 12 in Gardone Riviera, easily reached along the western lakeside road SS45bis. Access to the vast parkland and external monuments can be enjoyed independently, whereas guided admissions to the Prioria are strictly limited in group sizes to safeguard the fragile domestic collections and historic furnishings.
