Coast Guard Seizes Two Tonnes of Seafood Across Lake Garda in Regional Inspection Blitz

Italian Coast Guard patrol vessel operating on Lake Garda waters

Following a targeted three-day regional enforcement campaign, the Italian Coast Guard Seizes Two Tonnes of Seafood Across Lake Garda and its linked hospitality supply chain, issuing seventy-five thousand euros in administrative penalties alongside a formal criminal referral.

The extensive maritime and food hygiene operation was coordinated by the Centro Controllo Area Pesca (Fishery Control Area Centre) of the Direzione Marittima di Venezia. Coast Guard inspectors conducted simultaneous unannounced audits focusing on commercial distributors, refrigeration warehouses, and dining establishments serving visitors across Trentino Garda and the wider lake basin.

Wholesale Supplier Violations in Upper Garda

A primary inspection targeted a prominent wholesale supplier responsible for distributing seafood to high-end hotels and restaurants situated between northern Lake Garda and the Dolomite valleys. Upon inspecting the central distribution warehouse, officers identified severe health and hygiene deficiencies.

Inspectors uncovered approximately seventy-five kilograms of fresh fish stored in advanced stages of decay, crates of non-viable live bivalve molluscs that failed legal freshness thresholds, and industrial walk-in freezers coated in dust and organic residue. In total, authorities impounded six hundred kilograms of compromised seafood from the premises.

Restaurant Inspection Uncovers Menu Fraud and Untraceable Stock

A second targeted operation at an ethnic seafood restaurant in the lake district uncovered more than 1,400 kilograms of fish and shellfish stored entirely without statutory traceability documentation or origin certificates. Impounded stock included prawns, bluefin tuna loins, whole octopuses, squid, sea bass, and scampi, alongside bulk sacks of sushi rice past their expiration dates.

Authorities also cited the establishment for consumer fraud embedded within its digital QR-code menu. Menu entries systematically misled patrons regarding raw material provenance, including low-cost imported Vietnamese cephalopods fraudulently marketed as fresh Mediterranean horned octopus (moscardino).

Protecting Lake Dining Integrity and Local Fisheries

The enforcement campaign reinforces rigorous standards across Lake Garda’s gastronomic sector, which attracts millions of international diners each season. Regulators emphasised that rigorous traceability controls protect certified regional freshwater catches—such as coregone (whitefish), sarda del Garda, and arctic char—from illicit commercial substitution, safeguarding consumer health and gastronomic transparency.
