Inaugurating on Saturday, October 3, 2026, the Mario Porta Exhibition at Palazzo Menghini in Castiglione delle Stiviere brings together an evocative collection of late twentieth-century canvases dedicated to the morenic hills, rural life, and the unique atmospheric light of southern Lake Garda.
Titled “Mario Porta. Quando il territorio diventa paesaggio” (“When Territory Becomes Landscape”), the retrospective represents the seventh major exhibition in Palazzo Menghini’s historical series celebrating the local artistic community. Curated by art historian Gianfranco Ferlisi, the exhibition opens with a public reception at 4:00 PM and runs through January 10, 2027.
Lombard Chiarismo and Post-War Figurative Painting
Mario Porta (1933–2003), a native of Castiglione delle Stiviere, occupied a distinctive, reflective niche within twentieth-century Mantuan painting. His formal training matured in close contact with the masters of Lombard Chiarismo—including Oreste Marini, Ezio Mutti, Carlo Malerba, Angelo Del Bon, and Umberto Lilloni—before evolving into an autonomous visual grammar influenced by post-impressionism and post-war European figuration.
Porta’s artistic philosophy posited that a landscape is never merely a passive geographic vista; rather, it emerges when physical terrain is deeply experienced, recognized, and internalized through the collective sentiment of its inhabitants. Alongside the rolling morainic amphitheatres and lake horizons, his works depict intimate domestic interiors, his wife Angelina, his sons Alberto and Paolo, garden flowers, and working tools, elevating daily objects into poetic expressions of regional identity.
Curatorial Journey and Visitor Information
The curatorial narrative spans more than four decades of continuous painterly investigation, demonstrating Porta’s progressive chromatic independence and his sensitive brushwork. Mayor Enrico Volpi and Councillor for Culture Massimo Lucchetti emphasised that the retrospective solidifies Palazzo Menghini as a vital forum uniting regional history, fine arts, and community memory.
The exhibition is hosted at Palazzo Menghini, located at Via Cesare Battisti 27 in Castiglione delle Stiviere. Admission is free of charge. Opening hours are Fridays from 15:00 to 18:00, and Saturdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 12:00 and 15:00 to 18:00.
