The traditional Assenza di Brenzone Fishermen’s Festival (Pescatori in festa) takes place on Sunday, 4 October 2026, in the charming lakeside hamlet of Brenzone sul Garda. This unique community gathering profoundly intertwines popular devotion with the stark historical memory of the devastating explosion that rocked the nearby Trimelone Island on 5 October 1954.
The 1954 Trimelone Island Explosion
Situated just a few hundred metres from the shores of Assenza, the Isola del Trimelone served as a substantial military ammunition depot throughout both the First and Second World Wars. In the dead of night on 5 October 1954, a catastrophic series of detonations shook the entire Lake Garda basin. For three continuous days and nights, the island was torn apart by chain explosions, hurling unexploded ordnance and incandescent shrapnel onto the nearby shores.
The sheer scale of the disaster forced the immediate preventive evacuation of the entire village population, a drastic measure that miraculously prevented any loss of human life during the terrifying ordeal.
Religious Traditions and Freshwater Gastronomy
Today, the October commemorations open in the morning with a solemn Holy Mass at the parish church of San Nicola in Assenza, followed by the traditional blessing of the local fishing boats and the fishermen who work the lake’s waters.
Following the religious ceremonies, the picturesque small harbour and the lakeside promenade transform into a lively culinary hub. Food stands offer authentic freshwater fish dishes, highlighting local delicacies such as lake sardines (sarde di lago) and whitefish (lavarello). Set against a backdrop of community musical performances, the festival remains one of the most heartfelt and authentic autumn events on the shores of Lake Garda.
