The Regional Council of Lombardy has approved a new regulation concerning animal cemeteries and cremation facilities for pets, based on a proposal by the Welfare Councillor, Guido Bertolaso. This act, which is grounded in Regional Law No. 20 of October 21, 2022, establishes technical and operational requirements for the management of such facilities, outlining specific procedures for burial, exhumation, and site decommissioning. The regulation aligns with the principles of Regional Law 33/2009 regarding public health and animal welfare.
The document includes technical specifications for the construction and expansion of cemeteries and cremation facilities, as well as hygiene and safety standards. Additionally, it provides guidelines for the registration of animal carcasses and ashes. “This regulation represents a further commitment by the Lombardy Region to ensure dignity even in the final stages of pets’ lives,” stated Bertolaso. With the submission to the relevant Council Committee, the consultation phase is now underway before the final adoption of the regulation.
