The work for the creation of the Cherry Blossom Avenue in Borghetto di Valeggio sul Mincio officially began on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. This project represents a significant initiative by the municipal administration, which has collaborated with the Verona Superintendency to ensure the protection of the local landscape heritage.

The intervention became necessary after operators from Gardesana Servizi accidentally damaged the shallow roots of fourteen domestic pines along Via Sanzio during maintenance work on water services. The resulting lifting of the asphalt prompted the administration to plan for the replacement of the trees.

Mayor Alessandro Gardoni commented: “From a small issue that arose during the work carried out by AGS, our administration will seize a great opportunity, innovating in the name of beauty and quality for the tree heritage of one of the most picturesque streets in Borghetto.” This initiative is seen as a way to further enhance the area, not only for residents but also for the numerous tourists who visit the region.

Timing and Details of the Intervention

The work will have a minimal impact on traffic and will be carried out in several phases. Today and tomorrow, the existing trees will be cut down, while from Thursday, February 6, to Tuesday, February 11, chipping will take place, followed by the planting of new species.

Flowering cherries will be planted, specifically chosen to add color and beauty to the avenue during the spring weeks. Gardoni emphasized the importance of selecting the specimens: “The new trees will be planted in a mature vegetative state, ensuring a rapid restoration of the current layout of the site.”

Architectural Aspects

The area around the new trees will feature marble or corten curbs, which will be constructed alongside the final asphalt paving of the road, scheduled after the installation of the water supply and sewage systems.

The mayor also expressed understanding for any inconveniences that residents and merchants may experience during the work period but reiterated that the final result of the new Cherry Blossom Avenue will certainly be worth the effort made.
