Today, February 11th, we celebrate the European Day of the Single Emergency Number 112, established to raise awareness among citizens about the benefits of this essential service. The Single Emergency Number was activated in Italy on January 21, 2010, in Varese, and in 2024 it expanded its operations to Abruzzo, Puglia, and Emilia Romagna, enabling approximately 48 million citizens to request medical assistance, police, fire services, and maritime rescue. Calls are managed by the Unified Response Center, which ensures multilingual access and utilizes advanced location data to optimize intervention.
Throughout 2024, the centers handled over 18 million calls, with nearly 49% of requests deemed non-emergency. To improve accessibility for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, the “112Sordi” system has been in operation since 2021, already assisting numerous users. Today, the Prefect of the province of Brescia, Andrea Polichetti, will visit the NUE 112 Operations Room at 12:00 PM to meet with the leadership of the Law Enforcement Agencies and discuss the importance of public safety through this innovative organizational model.
