Recently, the topic of end of life has regained prominence in Lombardy, with President Fontana emphasizing the urgency for clear and certain legislation regarding . During a briefing held in the regional assembly, Fontana highlighted the necessity of addressing this sensitive issue with respect and seriousness, recalling the recent rulings from the Constitutional Court that have opened new possibilities for individuals in situations of unbearable suffering. The Region is implementing measures to ensure an adequate network of palliative care and is exploring citizens’ requests related to medically assisted suicide.

The Regional Table established to analyze these issues has already met several times in 2024 to discuss the implications of the Court’s rulings. Fontana expressed hope for a timely intervention from Parliament to define regulatory guidelines that can ensure rights and dignity for patients, thereby avoiding situations of legal ambiguity across the national territory.
