Recent observations have highlighted that the catfish, an invasive species, is becoming increasingly aggressive and threatening to the fish fauna of the lake. Underwater fishermen report a change in the lifestyle habits of this predator, which now moves in schools and displays a concerning voracity. To address this situation, a “containment” operation is scheduled for May in the lower Garda region, coordinated by Filippo Gavazzoni, vice president of the Garda Community. This initiative aims to monitor the catfish up to Punta Grò in Sirmione and gain a better understanding of its habits, which are already compromised by environmental factors and climate changes.
Over the past year, 45 divers from the Sport Fishermen’s Union have captured 250 kg of catfish, with specimens exceeding two meters in length. Despite the presence of poaching on the lake, Gavazzoni acknowledges the impossibility of completely eradicating the species and proposes a coordinated strategy between the shores to promote monitoring and sustainable fishing. The goal is to turn this challenge into an opportunity for local fishermen and to promote projects aimed at protecting the lake’s biodiversity.
