A 22-year-old man, already known to law enforcement, has been arrested in Verona on charges of carrying out a series of scams targeting the elderly by posing as a fake carabinieri. The operation, conducted by the Operational Section of the Carabinieri Company in Verona and coordinated by the local Prosecutor’s Office, led to the individual’s precautionary custody following an in-depth investigation into 24 fraud incidents that occurred in various Italian cities such as Genoa, Milan, and Rome. The modus operandi involved phone calls to victims, during which the scammer claimed that a family member was involved in an accident and requested money or valuables to resolve the situation.
The investigations revealed that the young man used advanced technologies to communicate and move around without being identified, but thanks to the analysis of surveillance camera footage and recognition by the victims, the Carabinieri were able to reconstruct his movements. This arrest represents a significant step in the fight against scams targeting the elderly, a phenomenon that is increasingly prevalent in the country.
