Alpine Rescue Sees Rising Incidents and Fatalities in Aosta Valley by 2025

The 2025 rescue report from CNSAS and the Valle d’Aosta Alpine Rescue, in collaboration with 112 Emergency Number and the National Health Service, recorded 13,037 missions across the region, marking an 8% increase from 2024. The operations involved nearly 47,000 rescuers and over 204,000 man-hours, with 528 fatalities, a 13% rise compared to the previous year.

The main causes of rescue incidents were falls or slips (45%), health emergencies (14.1%), and incapacitation during activities (8.1%). Popular activities include hiking (43.6%), mountain biking (7.6%), skiing (7.4%), mountaineering (5.2%), and mushroom gathering (3.2%). The report also noted 9,624 injuries, 140 missing persons, and a predominance of male victims (69.5%), mostly aged 50-60 years. The GeoResQ app managed 354 events and attracted over 55,000 new users, contributing to a total of 256,000 active users.
