Ancient Roman Estate Discovered Near Oglio River in Mantova Province

An important archaeological discovery has been made in a clay quarry situated in a riverine area of the Oglio River, near Campitello di Marcaria, in the province of Mantova. The perimeter (750 square meters) of a building from the Roman era, dating back 1,900 years, has been uncovered.

The initial hypothesis suggests it was a noble country residence. “It’s still too early to be certain,” explains Elena Menotti from the Superintendence of Archaeological Heritage. “We need to expand the excavation to determine the site’s extent. For this, we will also use aerial photographs.”
