Archaeological Finds Detected in Square’s Western Area Before Parking Construction

Before the first pickaxe blow for the construction of the underground parking lot, it must be confirmed that the subsoil does not hide archaeological finds capable of halting the continuation of the work.

In recent months, the Heritage and Cultural Assets department of the province carried out a ground-penetrating radar survey of the entire area of the square.

The “stratigraphy” revealed the presence of something significant only in the western part of the square, adjacent to the boundary wall of the pensioners’ residence (formerly Omni).

Interventions and costs

In that area, trenches will be excavated, with depths varying between 1 and 3 meters, oriented north-south, corresponding to the highlighted archaeological finds.

The operation will cost around twenty million euros, allocated by the Rivana administration: works are scheduled to begin next spring.

According to technicians, the excavation will serve to precisely identify the artifacts, detailing their characteristics and value.

The timeline is also favorable: the excavations are expected to be completed within a few weeks.
