Arco Launches Swallow City Initiative to Protect and Monitor Local Bird Population
Arco has launched the “Arco City of Swallows” project, a bird monitoring and conservation initiative focused on swallows, house martins, and barn swallows. The program will be officially presented on March 21 at Palazzo dei Panni from 10:00 to 12:30, featuring a nest-building workshop for families and an informational session led by ornithologist Dr. Alberto Bertocchi.
The project aims to map breeding sites within the historic center and surrounding areas, using cameras and mirrors to minimize disturbance. Data collected will be integrated into a GIS database for comparison with 2005 surveys, analyzing reproductive success and phenology. The initiative involves schools and citizens through field outings, citizen science tools like iNaturalist, and partnerships with Lipu, Monumenti Vivi, and WWF Trentino-Alto Adige.
